Young/Sommer Obtains Approval For Alfred Oaks Solar Energy Project in Allegany County, New York

Posted on October 9, 2024

On September 10th 2024, the New York State Office of Renewable Energy Siting and Electric Transmission (ORES) issued a final siting permit greenlighting the construction of the Alfred Oaks solar and energy storage project. When construction is completed, the Project will generate 100-megawatts (MW) of renewable energy and includes a 20 MW battery storage facility, the third project of its kind approved by ORES. The Facility is a critical component of the State’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act targets of achieving 70% of New York’s electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030 and the State’s goal of 1500 MW of energy storage by 2025. The project is also a significant economic development opportunity  for Town of Alfred and Allegany County because of the hundreds of anticipated construction jobs, PILOT payments, payments to host landowners and other potential economic benefit opportunities.

This is the 16th major renewable energy facility permitted by ORES since 2021, 13 of which were assisted by Young/Sommer. The Alfred Oaks project adds to Young/Sommer’s and energy practice leader Jim Muscato’s unparalleled 3 GWs of renewable energy project permits in New York. Jim Muscato and Laura Bomyea Darling serve as permitting counsel for the project.
