Jim Muscato, Class of 2001, has been featured in Albany Law School’s Alumni Magazine for his distinguished career and leadership in New York State’s Renewable Energy sector. As head of the energy practice at Young/Sommer LLC, Muscato has been at the forefront of advancing clean energy projects across the state. With over two decades of experience, Muscato has played a pivotal role in securing permits for wind, solar, and energy storage projects. His work spans high-profile appearances before key agencies, including the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the Department of Public Service, the Office of Renewable Energy Siting and Electric Transmission, and the NYS Energy Research and Development Authority.

Reflecting on his contributions to renewable energy development, Muscato shared, “I’ve been involved in permitting three gigawatts of renewable energy projects. Many of these projects are now generating electricity and supporting New York’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection law. The urgency of climate change has driven my work from the beginning, and I’m proud to help create a better future for my kids.”

Muscato credits Albany Law School for laying the foundation for his success. “Albany Law enhanced my passion for environmental law. Its location in New York’s capital provided unparalleled opportunities to engage with state government, advocacy groups, and the private sector,” he noted.

A particularly meaningful moment in Muscato’s career was sharing his achievements with his family. “Touring a wind farm I helped permit and taking a family photo inside one of the turbines was a special ‘dad moment’ for me,” he said. Muscato’s feature in the Alumni Magazine highlights his dedication to clean energy and environmental stewardship, as well as Albany Law School’s impact on shaping leaders in public interest and environmental law.
